Benefits of Technology Based Training (TBT)?

From a business standpoint, technology-based training makes a lot of sense for the following reasons:

  • Cost-effective – compared with classroom training, the costs of TBT are much lower.
  • Zero or reduced travel time and expenses - Training can be delivered wherever the employee is located. The biggest savings accrue from reducing the cost of delivering training.
  • Less time away from work - TBT requires less time to train than classroom training. If the employee doesn’t have to travel, the time away from work is reduced even more. This also means less time away from home to take the training.
  • Just-in-time training - Instead of taking training based upon a classroom schedule, the employee can take the training just before they actually need it.This flexible scheduling reduces the cost of training and improves productivity.
  • Consistent message – TBT, whether instructional or informational, offers the same content presented in the same manner each and every time an application is used. Reducing inconsistencies in the message makes it more likely that programs will yield intended results and less likely that there will be errors or rework due to poorly conveyed content.
  • Interactivity - In contrast to the passive learning that occurs in instructor-led training, interactive technology-based training provides a very active learning approach.
  • Learner controls- Learners can spend as much or as little time as they can afford at one session; bookmark features allow them to return to courses without repeating material that has already been mastered, therefore accelerating the completion of the material. Learners can review material, observe models, and practice responses as frequently as they see fit without fearing that they may appear "slow" or interruptive to their peers.
  • Individual paths - This type of delivery provides tailored information and feedback to each individual.
  • Performance tracking - The evaluation of classroom-based learning usually limits itself to paper-based course reactions and attitudinal input from learners.Technology-based learning systems generally depend upon online criterion tests that are linked to a course’s learning objectives. Resulting data can be made available to management for review and coaching. Information can also be uploaded to a corporate-wide courseware management system that can issue performance trend reports linked to business results and show worker readiness to meet strategic business objectives.
