European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
ECDL is a recognised qualification throughout Europe, which enables people to demonstrate their competence in computer skills. The ECDL syllabus is designed to cover the key concepts of computing, its practical applications and their use in the workplace and society in general. ECDL is open to anyone, regardless of age, education, experience or background.
What is the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)?
ECDL is an internationally recognised qualification that enables people to demonstrate their competence in computer skills.
How does it work?
The ECDL syllabus is designed to cover key concepts of computing, its practical applications and their use in the workplace and society in general. It is broken down into seven modules; a test for each must be passed before the ECDL certificate is awarded. ECDL is open to anyone, regardless of age, gender, education, experience or background.
The modules are:
- Basic concepts of Information Technology
- Using the Computer and Managing Files
- Word Processing
- Spreadsheets
- Database
- Presentation
- Information and Communication
Registration for the ECDL is through an Accredited Test Centre, such as AP Courses. Registered candidates will receive a log book, which records progress through the qualification. As the test for each module is passed, the Accredited Test Centre will sign the log book. The tests may be taken in any order at an individual’s own pace. They may even be taken all at once, but must be completed within 3 years. When all tests have been successfully passed, the log book is returned to the BCS, who will issue the ECDL Certificate.

For those students living in Jersey or Guernsey, Channel Islands, AP Courses is an accredited testing centre for the ECDL qualification. AP Courses uses a fully automated testing system, so each exam is marked instantly and the student receives their results seconds after completing their last question - there is no need to wait weeks for your results.
